Year 9 at JSR
Year 9: A Year of Challenge
Year 9 is undoubtedly a year of challenge for your students. It is a year when they are challenged socially, mentally, emotionally and academically. However, a milestone for this year level, the Year 9 Rite Journey Program, a year-long program that challenges students' thinking and explores new ideas about themselves, their values, and the independent person they are becoming.
During this program, students work within their RiteJourney Classes to explore issues and personal challenges they face as they navigate the turbulent transition from childhood to adulthood. Throughout these classes, the key themes of connection, diversity, inclusivity, identity, and future self are central. Guided by our Rite Journey staff and you, as parents, students will be challenged physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
A Foundation for Success
Middle School at JSR lays a strong foundation for future success. We support students as they grow in confidence, develop strong learning habits, and take increasing responsibility for their education.
Leadership and service opportunities help students build character and recognise the value of contributing in tangible and meaningful ways to the world around them.
Our transition program into Senior School begins early, with students gaining the skills and support they need to thrive in the next stage of their journey, both academically and emotionally. We work closely with families to ensure each student is prepared, confident, and excited for the next stage of their journey.
Year 9 Curriculum
In addition to the Year 9 core curriculum, students can select two electives to study during the year.
These include:
- Performing Arts - Choosing either Dance, Drama or Music
- Visual Arts - Choosing either Media Arts or Visual Arts
- Design Technologies - Choosing either Food Technologies, Design and Technologies (Woodwork)
- Languages - Choosing either Chinese or Indonesian
- Physical Education - Outdoor Education or Basketball Program (Only selected students may choose this elective)
Specialist Programs
Commencing in Year 9, students with a passion for Dance have the opportunity to participate in the JSR Specialist Dance Program via audition.

The JSR Elite Basketball Program offers passionate student athletes the opportunity to further develop their skills within a structured and supportive environment. Our teams have dominated state competitions in recent years and are now receiving recognition at a national and international level. With students being selected for College Basketball in the USA and others selected for the Wildcats Academy, JSR Basketball is on the rise.
