Excellence, Opportunity, and Passion in Every Note

At JSR, music is more than a subject - it’s a vibrant part of our identity. Whether pursuing music as a passion or a potential career path, students are supported every step of the way.

Music has long been a valued part of life at JSR. Our vibrant music program offers a wide range of ensembles and performance opportunities, both within the School and the wider community.

The Music Department offers a rich range of musical experiences for students from Kindy to Year 12. Our program goes beyond learning notes, nurturing confidence, creativity and a strong sense of community through music.

Learn to Play or Sing

From the earliest years, music is an integral part of student life at JSR. For some, this nurtures a lasting appreciation, while for others, a spark of curiosity grows into a lifelong passion.

With access to visiting specialist music teachers, students may also choose to extend their learning through additional instrumental lessons, supporting those who wish to pursue music at an advanced level.

All music lessons are scheduled within the school day and can be booked as private or shared lessons to help students advance their skills on their chosen instrument. We also offer instrumental hire options

Ensembles

Our numerous choirs, orchestras, bands and ensembles meet every week. All students enrolled in individual voice or instrumental tuition are expected to participate in at least one of the groups listed below. Practising and performing are not just about the end result. Students learn teamwork, perseverance, and precision through ensemble work.

Music is intended to be shared, which is why we provide numerous opportunities for our students to showcase their talent and musical prowess at our annual concerts and performances, which are always a highlight on the school calendar. These events include: School Musicals, Roechella, Interhouse Music Festival, Jazz Night, Tea Time concerts, Music Soirées and Music Gala Night

St Paul’s Chapel Choir

The St Paul’s Chapel Choir is a chorister programme in the Anglican tradition for students in Years 4–12, based at John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School. Established in 2008, the programme provides students with a specialised education in choral singing of a high standard. Choristers develop advanced musical skills comparable to those cultivated in leading Anglican choral institutions, contributing significantly to their musical, academic, and personal development.

The Chapel Choir Programme serves JSR and the wider community by sustaining a distinguished choir that enhances Anglican worship, upholds the musical heritage of the Anglican Church, and promotes excellence in the tradition of choral singing. The Chapel Choir is affiliated with the Royal School of Church Music.
