‍Pre-Primary and Year 1 students grow in curiosity, confidence and belonging as they explore their world, build relationships and develop a lifelong love of learning.

During these important years, our focus is on building strong foundations in literacy and numeracy through engaging, high-quality learning experiences that inspire curiosity and confidence.

Through meaningful connections, students begin to understand their strengths and see themselves as capable, confident learners ready to embrace new challenges as they build self-belief, resilience and a strong sense of belonging.

Pre Primary

Engage with the World Around Us

In Pre-Primary, children are encouraged to explore, connect and engage with the world around them. Through meaningful learning experiences, students develop a growing understanding of themselves, their families, and the wider community. They build a strong sense of identity and belonging as they learn about familiar places, discover what makes them special, and explore how they can care for the people and environments around them.

Students are introduced to different cultures, traditions and family stories, helping them develop an appreciation for diversity and an understanding of the many ways people live and connect across the world. Alongside this, children learn to communicate their thoughts, feelings and ideas with confidence, using appropriate language and actions in a range of social situations.

Year 1

Understanding Change and Growth

In Year 1, children are encouraged to explore change as a natural part of life and learning. Through age-appropriate experiences, students begin to recognise how they grow and change over time, as well as the changes that occur within their families, friendships and the world around them.

By exploring stories, events and experiences from the past, children develop an understanding of how change shapes the present and influences their everyday lives. They are encouraged to ask questions, investigate new ideas and develop their curiosity about the world, fostering the foundations of inquiry and critical thinking.

Students also learn to recognise and express their emotions, developing practical strategies that support their wellbeing and help them build positive relationships with others. Through these experiences, children grow in confidence, resilience and self-awareness as they navigate an ever-changing world.

Specialist Learning

Unlike many schools, JSR offers specialist learning in the primary school years, delivered by passionate educators with deep expertise in their fields. Providing this unique opportunity enriches each child’s experience, broadens their opportunities, and helps them discover and develop their individual interests, passions and talents from Kindy through to Year 12.

Subjects include: Dance and Drama, Physical Education, Library and Digital Technologies, Music, Visual Arts and Religious Education
