The Arts at JSR: A Tradition of Growth and Excellence

In recent years, John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School has embraced a number of significant developments across both academic and sporting domains. These initiatives have been deliberate and important, ensuring that our students are challenged, supported and provided with opportunities to strive for excellence in all areas of School life.

At the same time, it is important to affirm that this focus has not come at the expense of the Arts Rather, the Arts continue to hold a central and enduring place within the life of the School. They remain a clear priority, recognised not as an “add-on”, but as an essential pillar of a holistic and well-rounded education.

At JSR, we believe that education must extend beyond academic achievement and physical performance. It must also nurture creativity, expression and a deeper understanding of self and others. The Arts play a vital role in this formation, providing students with opportunities to explore their identity, develop confidence, and engage meaningfully with the world around them.

It is within this context that the ongoing growth and development of the Arts at JSRACS can be understood, not simply as a series of events or programs, but as a sustained commitment to shaping young people who are imaginative, resilient and equipped for life beyond school.

The Arts have long held an important place within the life of John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School. Over many years, the School has developed a strong and vibrant Arts culture, one that values participation, celebrates creativity and provides meaningful opportunities for students to discover and express their talents.

From classroom learning to co-curricular involvement, students at JSR have consistently engaged in Music, Visual Arts, Drama and Dance as part of a well-rounded educational experience. Events such as the Interhouse Music Festival, the Visual Arts, Design and Technology Exhibition, Choreography Night and the many School Drama and Musical Productions and have become enduring traditions, bringing the School community together. These moments not only showcase our specific arts talent, but also reflect the dedication, collaboration and courage of students who step forward to perform.

Large-scale productions, including recent performances such as 9 to 5: The Musical, further demonstrate the strength of the Arts at JSR and the commitment of our staff. These productions require months of preparation, commitment and teamwork, and provide students with an authentic experience of working towards a common creative goal. In doing so, they build skills that extend well beyond the stage.

The School’s commitment to continuing growth in the Arts is also evident in emerging initiatives. Just last week, auditions were held for the newly introduced Dance Scholarships.

While these scholarships are yet to be formally awarded, the level of interest and participation in the audition process has already highlighted both the enthusiasm and potential within our student body. This initiative represents an important next step in strengthening Dance at JSR, providing structured pathways for students to further develop their skills and passion.

Importantly, the Arts at JSR are not simply about performance outcomes; they are central to the formation of the whole person. Through sustained engagement in the Arts, students develop:

• Confidence and presence, as they learn to perform and communicate with clarity
• Creativity and innovation, as they explore ideas and express themselves in diverse ways
• Collaboration and empathy, as they work with others towards shared outcomes
• Resilience and discipline, as they rehearse, refine and strive for excellence

These attributes are invaluable as students transition beyond school into the wider world. Whether they pursue the Arts directly or follow other pathways, the habits of mind and character developed through creative engagement remain lifelong assets.

At JSR, we are proud of the tradition we have built in the Arts, and equally excited about the direction in which we are heading. With continued investment, emerging opportunities and a strong culture of participation, the Arts will remain a defining and enriching feature of the JSR experience for years to come.

School Council Expressions of Interest

We are seeking Expressions of Interest from members of our community who bring expertise in Finance, Project Management and/or Governance, and who may be interested in contributing to the work of our School Council, commencing January/February 2027.

We warmly invite current parents, alumni and former staff members with relevant professional experience to consider this important service opportunity. School Council plays a vital role in supporting the strategic direction, sustainability, and governance of the School, and benefits greatly from the breadth of skills within our community.

It is preferred, though not essential, that members of the School Council are Communicant Members of the Anglican Church.

Those wishing to be considered are asked to submit a 500-word (max) Expression of Interest (EOI), accompanied by an up-to-date CV.

Your EOI should address the following three questions:

· What relevant skills, experience, or professional expertise would you bring to School Council?

· Why are you interested in serving on the School Council at JSRACS, and how does this align with your connection to the School?

· What do you see as the key opportunities or challenges facing an independent school such as JSRACS, and how could you contribute to addressing these?

This is a valuable opportunity to contribute to the continued strength and future direction of the School, working collaboratively with Council members and the Executive. If you are interested, please submit your EOI and CV via chair@jsracs.wa.edu.au by 4.00pm, 29 June 2026.
